Sweden guest of honour at Bologna Children’s Book Fair

Sweden was the guest of honour at the world’s largest children’s book fair in Bologna on 25–28 March 2013, where children’s and young people’s right to culture was the overall theme.

The Bologna Children’s Book Fair is the biggest international event in the field of children’s and young adult literature. As guest of honour, Sweden presented a major exhibition on contemporary Swedish illustration. The Swedish component of the programme wass also including seminars and activities featuring Swedish authors and illustrators, both at the fair and at other venues in the city of Bologna.

Massive Swedish presence in Bologna

Sweden is Guest of Honour at this year’s Bologna Children’s Book Fair, presenting a major exhibition with picturebook illustrators. Flying objects inspired by children will catch the eye of visitors and draw them in to the exhibition. The overall theme is Children’s Right to Culture. The book fair is to be opened by Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth, Sweden’s minister for culture. Some 50 Swedish writers and illustrators will be present.

Contemporary Swedish Illustrators presents 31 picturebooks illustrators and a short history of illustration as an art form in Sweden. The illustrators were selected by an expert jury, to represent Sweden at Bologna Children’s Book fair 2013 when Sweden is Guest of Honour.

Meet Swedish Authors and illustrators

Around 50 Swedish authors and illustrators will be  present as Sweden becomes the first Nordic country to be guest of honour at the world’s largest children’s book fair in Bologna, Italy, on March 25-28 2013. The overarching theme is Children’s right to culture and the fair will be opened by Sweden’s  Minister for Culture Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth. The book fair will feature a range of seminars and presentations, including the authors Sara Elfgren Bergmark, Mats Strandberg, Ulf Stark, Martin Widmark and Moni Nilsson. Sweden’s Reading Ambassador Johan Unenge will be meeting colleagues from Ireland and Australia for a discussion on how to encourage children to read more books.

The recipient of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award 2013 will be announced in Bologna

The recipient or recipients of the world’s largest award for children’s and young adult literature, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA), will be announced on March 26 at 1:00 pm. The announcement takes place in Vimmerby, the birthplace of Astrid Lindgren, and will be streamed live to the Bologna fair and broadcast on the ALMA web. This year, 207 candidates from 67 countries are nominated.

Illustrators selected for the Bologna Children’s Book Fair

On November 20 the names of the approximately thirty illustrators chosen to represent Sweden at the world’s largest Children’s Book Fair in Bologna in March 2013 were announced. Well-known names include Anna-Clara Tidholm, sisters Lisen and Emma Adbåge, Sven Nordqvist and many other contemporary Swedish illustrators of children’s books.
