Swedish Arts Council – Organisation

The Swedish Arts Council is managed by a board appointed by the government. The Council's administrative office has around 80 employees. Most of them work in the departments for the performing arts, art and museums, and literature and libraries.

The Swedish Arts Council is a government authority.

Chairman: Kerstin Brunnberg
Director General: Kennet Johansson

The Swedish Arts Councils' administrative office has four departments:

  • Department of Arts and Culture
  • Department of Communication
  • Department of Development and Analysis
  • Department of Administration

There is also an administrative office for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA), which is an independent unit under the director general.

The board of the Swedish Arts Council determines issues including budgets, operational policy and other matters of fundamental importance. The board also rules on certain grant-related issues. To ensure specialist knowledge in the distribution of grants in various branches of the arts, the board has appointed working and reference groups comprising qualified subject experts. The working groups make independent decisions on grant-related issues, whereas the reference groups pass on their proposals to the board, which subsequently arrives at a decision.

The head of the Swedich Arts Council, the general director, determines day-to-day operations, staffing matters and certain grants.
