Record-breaking number of translation grants 2020

Despite the difficult times last year, we got over 500 applications for grants for translation and production of Swedish books 2020. An increase with 30 percent from 2019. Due to the strong interest and increase the translation grant budget will be strengthened with an additional 1.5 million SEK for 2021.

Of the 500 applications 2020, we were happy to be able to approve 351 translations into 47 languages with 6,7 million SEK. 1 million SEK came from the Nordic Council of Ministers, for translations into other Nordic languages. The top five languages were Italian, Danish, Spanish, Russian and French. The largest number of approved applications were for contemporary novels (120), followed by children’s fiction (80) and picturebooks (47).

The top five books for adults were: 1794 by Niklas Natt och Dag (fiction), Den rödaste rosen slår ut by Liv Strömquist (comics/graphic novel),  Testamente by Nina Wähä (fiction), Välkommen till Amerika by Linda Boström (fiction) and Kunskapens frukt by Liv Strömquist (comics/graphic novel).

The top five in children and YA were Mitt storslagna liv by Jenny Jägerfeld, Rymlingarna by Ulf Stark and Kitty Crowther, Ishavspirater by Frida Nilsson, Vi ses när vi ses by Rose Lagercrantz and Eva Eriksson and Vänta på vind by Oscar Kroon, all of them children’s fiction, with a significant rise in popularity this year.
